Demonstration experiments

Aim

To determine the boiling point of water

Apparatus
  • Thermometer
  • Beaker
  • Bunsen burner
  • Matches or Lighter
  • Wire gauze
  • Tripod stand
  • Retort stand

Materials

  •     Hot water

Procedure
  1. Set up the apparatus.
  2. Light the Bunsen burner.
  3. Make sure that the bulb of the thermometer is below the water level.
  4. Observe and record the temperature of the water after it has boiled.

  1. How do you know that the water is boiling?
  2. What is the boiling point of water?

  •      Ice

Procedure
  1. Fill a beaker with ice as shown in the diagram below.
  2. Put a thermometer inside the beaker.
  3. Observe and record the reading of the thermometer until the reading does not change anymore.
